LECTURES

A lecture is a way of teaching where a teacher or expert talks to a group of students about a specific topic. The word lecture comes from the Latin word lēctūra, which means “reading.” Lectures help students learn new ideas, theories, history, and important information.
The main goal of a lecture is to give students something beyond what they can read in books or online. A lecture should not just repeat what students already know. Instead, it should explain things in a way that makes learning easier and more interesting.
Lectures have been used for many years and are still common in schools and colleges. But are they the best way to learn? The answer is “Yes, but…”
Lectures are useful because they provide up-to-date information, help summarize important points, adapt to the interests and knowledge of students, and focus on key concepts and ideas. However, research shows that students learn better when new information connects to what they already know. That’s why a good lecture should create a bridge between old and new knowledge.
Lectures can happen in person or online and are an important part of many academic courses. Many teachers hold the title of “lecturer” or “senior lecturer.”
In a lecture, the teacher speaks for 40 to 45 minutes, students listen and take notes, and visual tools like PowerPoint or whiteboards are often used.
Even though lectures are traditional, they can be more engaging by including discussions, questions, and real-life examples. This helps students understand and remember the information better.
There are three main reasons to use the lecture format :
- To Transit Information
- To Create Interest (and to motivate students).
- To Promote Understanding (affect).
